Silverlight 1.0 Released

Well, it’s about time!

Just kidding. :) Congrats to the Silverlight team. I know they worked their proverbial butts off to get this release out. And at a cursory glance, it looks very solid. I posted some links below that talk about the release in greater detail:

As usual, the comments in some of these site’s forums contain a healthy dose of Microsoft bigotry. However, one commenter mentioned something I’ve thought since the beta-WPF days: if Microsoft wants to get serious about making Silverlight delivery cross platform, they will need to make the development experience cross platform also. Plenty of designers AND developers use Macs, including me :) (after developing in Java on my MacBook, I will never go back to Windows Java development). While writing my tutorials, I’ve found myself wishing for at least the command line compiler so I didn’t have to fire up VMWare Fusion (although, Fusion IS glorious :) ). I can start writing a JavaFX tutorial in a coffee shop on my MacBook and then finish it at home on my Linux workstation without even thinking about it. I want this same experience with Silverlight. But perhaps open-source developers will beat Microsoft to it: Lunar Eclispe certainly does look promising.

Please sir, I want some more

While happy about the Silverlight 1.0 release annoucement, Scott Guthrie REALLY made my day when he said:

Now that Silverlight 1.0 is out the door, my team is cranking hard on our Silverlight 1.1 release.

Now, THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT! :) I think even Microsoft knows that developers want to create more than just a media player-style app and they want to do it in C#, as promised. Hopefully, we’ll see another “refresh” to Silverlight 1.1 soon.

All in all, it looks like Microsoft has entered “ruthless execution mode”. A rare state for them, but when it happens, I expect truly great things. Only time will tell.
